Dedicated in June of 2002, Phelps Stadium is a lighted facility with seating for over 2000 spectators and is handicapped accessible. From their locker rooms in the nearby Harrison Rink facility, Andover athletes enter the stadium through the Sorota Tunnel, named in honor of legendary football and track coach, Steve Sorota. Brothers Field is also the game field for boys lacrosse and is used for girls lacrosse, field hockey and soccer.
The Garver Room is named for John Anson Garver, Phillips Academy class of 1871. He was a lawyer in New York City, and a friend of Thomas Cochran, who funded the building of the library. Garver’s son, Chauncey, a member of the class of 1904, donated the painting of John Garver at the west end of the room.
The Department of Theatre and Dance offers students diverse opportunities to develop skills in all aspects of performance and production. Although the department houses two distinct disciplines, theatre and dance, they share a mutual goal: to guide students toward an understanding of performance as a form of communication and expression. Student life support is demonstrated in the residential community. Within each dormitory an upper class student applies for and is selected as a proctor or prefect. Proctors live in the upper class dormitories and prefects live in the junior dormitories. These students are crucial in the role of supportive advisor and counselor.
Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, is the oldest incorporated boarding school in the United States. The Academy, widely known today as “Andover,” was founded at the height of the American Revolutionary War in 1778 by the Honorable Samuel Phillips, Jr. Phillips Academy in Andover is the older of the two Phillips Academies, which are independent of each other. Phillips Exeter Academy, located in Exeter, New Hampshire, was founded three years later by Samuel Phillips’s uncle, John Phillips. The two schools have enjoyed a passionate sports rivalry since 1861, making it one of the oldest and most storied school rivalries in the nation.
Completed in 2004, the Gelb Science Center is a state-of-the-art facility that provides students with an ideal environment to pursue a science curriculum that ranges from introductory courses in biology and chemistry to electives that allow them to explore topics that are rarely encountered in a secondary school science environment. The Gelb Science Center is named after alumnus donor Richard L. Gelb.
Samuel Phillips Hall was built in 1924 and named after the founder of the school. This building houses the languages, history, social sciences departments, as well as the school's language lab. Thomas Cochran created the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in 1931 as the most extraordinary of his many gifts to the school. Guided by Cochran's goal "to enrich permanently the lives of the students," the Addison's programs demonstrate a central concern for education; The museum is a teaching resource for Phillips Academy students and faculty as well as an art center for the greater Boston area and the nation at large.
Cochran Chapel is the spiritual center of Phillips Academy. First dedicated in 1932, it was the final gift of Thomas Cochran, Class of 1890. Designed by architect Charles Adams Platt, the exterior is neo-Georgian. The interior, barrel-vaulted and colonnaded with carved oak paneling, suggests the late 17th-century English Baroque style of Christopher Wren.
Since reopening in March 2009, Paresky Commons has served an average of 3,300 meals per day to its approximately 1,100 students, 225 faculty and family members and 350 staff, making it the largest single energy consumer on campus.
